| The Department of Marketing |
The Department of Marketing was just a course at RUC at first. In 1979, it was a course for the postgraduate students of the Trade and Economics Department and was called the “Theory of Marketing”. The textbook for this course was “Sales management: decisions, strategies, and cases” written by Richard R. Still. Renmin University of China was one of the first universities in China to give the course of marketing to students. In the 1980s, we began to use Phillip Kotler's “Marketing Management” as the textbook. Professor Tang Gonglie and Professor Kuang Hong of the Department of Trade and Economics were the pioneers in the field of marketing at RUC. Since 1986, marketing has become a course for all RUC students majored in finance and economics.
RBS began to have undergraduate students specialized in marketing in 1993 and RUC was the first universities to have marketing specialty for undergraduate students. In 1993, the former Department of Trade and Economics began to recruit undergraduate students as marketing majors. At the same time, the sophomore majored in price from the former Department of National Economy Management were directly transferred to marketing majors. Thus, in 1995 we had the first graduates in marketing.
In 1993 when the undergraduate specialty of marketing was set up, a marketing teaching and research section of marketing (in the Department of Trade and Economics) was established. There were only 6 instructors including 2 associate professors. In the meantime, the commercial economics postgraduate program began to take in students in marketing for master's degree, and now over ten passels of graduates in marketing management have obtained their master degree. At that time the Market Research Institute and the Marketing Research Center of China were not yet established in the Marketing Department, but great achievements were made in taking part in the practice of reform and opening to the outside world and training the ability of practical skills of students. In 2003, the master and doctoral programs in marketing management were approved by the Postgraduate School of RUC and began to recruit students independently in 2004.
In 2006 the Department of Marketing of RBS was formed. Now it consists of 19 instructors including 7 professors, 9 associate professors, and 3 lecturers. It has made a series of achievements in the theory of marketing, brand management, marketing communication, sales and channel management, retail management, etc. At present, as one of the key academic subjects in enterprise management of RBS, it keeps on enhancing the teaching quality and scientific research level and taking part in the international and national academic exchange to make greater achievements in accordance with the uniform planning under the leadership of the school. |
